What Are The 5 Parts Of An Essay?

What Are The 5 Parts Of An Essay? If you are not sure how to use a database, then book an appointment with your subject librarian at your institution. ‘Compare’ often appears with ‘contrast’ in essay questions.ContrastShow the differences between two sets of information or arguments. ‘Contrast’ often appears with ‘compare’ in essay questions.CriticiseEvaluate an argument or a text to see if it is good. At first, chocolate, a derivative of the cacao bean, was consumed as a drink, only later achieving mass popularity in tablet or bar form. However, chocolate’s inherent popularity does not equate to it possessing healthy properties, as suggested by the title. The realities of chocolate are more down to earth; a number of these realities will be addressed in this essay. For a 1000 word essay you need at least three days to redraft your essay. Essays also sometimes begin with an issue, outline the scope and then move on to end the introduction with the thesis statement. You might wonder how you can include your own voice and still sound academic when you are writing about a subject area in which you have little knowledge. Including your voice does not mean that you should say ‘I think’ or ‘in my opinion’. Since Spanish explorers brought back chocolate from the new world, chocolate consumption has become a worldwide phenomenon. Chocolate has chemical properties that can influence mood and there is possible evidence for some positive impacts of chocolate on cardiovascular health. Yet, such positive attributes are counterbalanced somewhat by the argument that, in some instances, chocolate can be viewed as a drug rather than a food. Moreover, there is the possibility of some correlation between over-consumption of chocolate and obesity. Thus, it will be argued that despite chocolate’s positive effect in some cases on mood and the cardiovascular system it has also been linked to addiction and obesity. Leave yourself enough time to look at your essay more than once. The thesis statement often comes at the end of the introduction, although it can be written earlier. Writing your introduction last means you are more likely to have a tighter fit between the introduction, main body and conclusion because you already know what your essay will be about. Topic sentenceThe topic sentence can function as a sentence of transition from the previous paragraph. Once you have brainstormed your ideas and done some initial research, start putting them into a logical order as part of the essay planning process. However, you should never forget to say where these ideas come from, even if you don’t quote the person’s exact words. This is very important in academic writing in western countries, and if you do not do this you might be accused of plagiarism, which is a serious offence at university. Obesity and chocolate consumption seemingly have no proven correlations. Another possible positive dimension to chocolate is a correlation with cardiovascular health. The first two articles have been cited 90 times and 103 times respectively, suggesting that they might be good sources for your essay. The links to the right indicate that you can access the articles through your university website. The best place to start (assuming you haven’t already been given a prescribed reading list!) is by using an academic database. Yet the potential benefits of flavanols in chocolate are currently offset by the high fat/carbohydrate content of most forms of chocolate. Whether chocolate is a food or a drug is also unclear. It can therefore be said that chocolate is not a healthy food, but can be enjoyed as part of a healthy and balanced diet and lifestyle. To write a 1000 word essay, ideally you should allow yourself about 3 weeks. Brainstorming helps you to see what you know about the topic. Brainstorming, researching and planning are cyclical, which means that each process helps the other processes and you might want to do each process more than once. Sometimes, particularly in very short essays, the essay will begin with an issue rather than a background statement. The thesis and scope are sometimes combined to form one or more sentences known as a thesis statement.

How To Construct An Essay

How To Construct An Essay Your essay will always go beyond the anecdote, but an anecdote offers a reader an easy, smooth way into your personal statement. There are a number of ways to approach freewriting, and all of them are meant to keep you limber, loose, and free. Is there a prevalent belief in your family or community with which you disagree? Tell the story of an argumentâ€"cordial or notâ€"that you’ve had with someone about this issue. This sentence introduces the paragraph topic and briefly explains its significance to the question and your contention. Good paragraphs also contain thorough explanations, some analysis and evidence, and perhaps a quotation or two. A paragraph should focus on one topic or issue only â€" but it should contain a thorough exploration of that topic or issue. Many consider the introduction to be the most important part of an essay. It is the reader’s first experience of your essay. In order to get into your dream school, you’ll need not only great grades and test scores but also a strong personal statement. Your Personal Statement is the single loudest ‘qualitative’ element of your application. It’s the way you communicate with the admissions committee as a person and as a potential member of the campus community. With more people applying to colleges every year, admissions officers know they can have their pick of bright and motivated students. Tell the story of a time you are proud of how you handled conflict in relation to this disagreement. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. It is where you first address the question and express your contention. It is also where you lay out or ‘signpost’ the direction your essay will take. An essay using this contention would then go on to explain and justify these statements in greater detail. It will also support the contention with argument and evidence. In addition to seeing your talents and achievements on paper, they need a chance to imagine what you might be like as a walking, talking human being. The college application process has a logic to itâ€"and it’s one you, the applicant, can both navigate and trust. All those essays, all those forms, all those questions? They’re about getting you in touch with the most authentic and vibrant version of yourself. A history essay is only likely to succeed if it is appropriately referenced. We look at the themes that came up during Josh’s reflection. He found himself writing a lot about mistakes, public performance anxiety, and the pressure to get a piece just right. Focusing in, Josh thought about a specific piece which helped him get over some performance anxiety, so he’ll write about learning that piece and facing the fear. So we decide that Ramya is going to write about the Patriots. For better knowledge of everything are the focus of one’s essay paper, allow us to take a look at the things you need to know. Initially, SCERTs will select 10 best essays from each state/UT, and later NCERT will choose the best essay at the national level. We strongly recommend using all 650 words, though you are not required to do so. If you’re well below that limit, it’s worth asking yourself why your personal statement is so short. Check it against the outlines we’ve worked through in this post. Your essay should support its information, ideas and arguments with citations or references to reliable sources. A good paragraph will begin with an effective opening sentence, sometimes called a topic sentence or signposting sentence. Has your essay demonstrated change over time, or personal growth? Perhaps you’ve told a story but forgotten to reflect on it. The important thing is to ensure that you’ve fully inhabited each ‘element’ of the successful Common App Essay, as noted in this guide. Doing so will bring you close to the sensible word limit. The question is how she’s going to demonstrateâ€"through her football fandomâ€"that she is a mature and thoughtful person who will be a good member of any college’s community. As you saw in the prompts above, we’re big advocates of beginning with a particular story or anecdote. This is NOT the only way to start an essay, but it’s a classic one. Journalists call this a “lede”â€"it’s a hook that brings the reader into a wider topic.

We can analyse the text in our sample introduction and look at the elements it needs to contain. Please refer to the assignment question on the right hand side of the screen. Notice the key words which in this case they are ‘academic learning and literacy centres’. Also notice these key words ‘ the most effective approach’. Regardless of the topic or the task, it is very important to understand and analyse the assignment question before embarking on any assignment writing exercise. Read widely around the topic before you even start and you’re halfway there. Essays need to have a beginning, a middle and an end. The introduction should outline the problem, explain why it’s important, and briefly outline the main arguments. Don’t start with a dictionary definition â€" this is clichéd and boring. It should sum up the main arguments in the middle and finish with a conclusions that finally answers the essay question. That is, it tells you what things mean and what they are; and it uses examples to show you how they work. Welcome to Writing Essays, the RLF’s online guide to everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about writing undergraduate essays. If it’s a ‘compare and contrast’ kind of question, you’ll need to demonstrate both sides of the argument. Writing Essays does not cover every type of writing you will do at university but it does cover the principal types. So you will find guides to essay writing, dissertation writing, and report writing. You will also find a section dealing with the differences between writing for the humanities and writing for the sciences and social sciences. The information and guidelines in these sections will provide blueprints you can apply elsewhere. The guide is a toolbox of essay writing skills and resources that you can choose from to suit your particular needs. If it’s a ‘define and explain’ kind of question, you’ll need to show that you have a deep understanding of the topic. If it has two parts, divide your essay into two parts to answer the question. What’s important is that there is no set rule as to how many paragraphs you can use for any section of your essay. In a long essay, your introduction might take up two or three paragraphs. You can also have as many middle paragraphs as you like. Every essay obviously has an introduction and a conclusion. This is designed to orientate the reader and provide them with some sort of context beforehand. It is absolutely critical to prepare your reader with this type of background information-do not immediately launch into your argument. Let’s imagine then, that we have spent some time and worked on our first draft of our essay and have written the introduction to the essay question. The trick with writing paragraphs is to remind your reader of the general argument. However, there’s no need to conclude every paragraph with a summary of what came before. Just make sure you paragraphs transition nicely from one to the next. Some teachers advice their students to come up with three points for their thesis. What invariably ends up happening is that you end up writing three mini-essays that are only loosely connected. A clear interpretation of the question and a well-structured plan are essential. This may involve discussing your questions, needs and concerns with your tutor, lecturer or subject coordinator to clarify the assignment question or by speaking to a HELPS Advisor. Naturally, you will need to do some background reading to consolidate your ideas before your start planning your essay. We will try to make it clearer for you by actually using a sample introduction that was written for a real-life academic essay. Each paragraph will address one main idea that supports the thesis statement. The first paragraph of the body should put forth your strongest argument to support your thesis. Start the paragraph out by stating the supporting idea.

What Are The 5 Parts Of An Essay?

What Are The 5 Parts Of An Essay? Similarly, a structure of some kind is probably essential for every essay, however revolutionary. Throughout this process, the essay title is the single immovable feature. You begin there; you end there; and everything in between needs to be placed in relation to that title. In these early stages of your thinking you may not be sure which of your ideas you want to follow up and which you will be discarding. When writing a report, a number of books, websites and journal articles may be used. It is extremely important that your sources of reference are both adequate and accurate. Part of the skill in report writing is to know what to leave out as well as include. You may lose marks if your report is too long or too short. All reports should have an introduction, main body, divided into sections, a conclusion and, sometimes, recommendations. Questions to ask of your introduction and conclusion may be useful. Later composers moved away from strict symphonic form. Some retained a loose link to it while others abandoned it completely, in favour of more fluid patterns. It would be rare, however, to find a symphony that was without structure or pattern of any kind; it would probably not be satisfactory either to play or to listen to. Policeman of the World Essay - 1100 Words

Policeman of the World (Essay Sample) Content: The rise of US to a world super powerName:Professorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s name:Institution affiliation:Course:Date:Introduction United States achieved the position of dominance over other nations in the world after the World War II. The achievement was motivated strongly by the presence of the strong economy, an immense international political power, overpowering military, and, a strong national ideology that the government in the US. The rising of America to a superpower status began when it enters into World War I. It made the United States to claim the border democracy than those that prevailed in the Europe continent. It is as a result of the World War II and its effects that cause the US to experience such a preponderance of power in the world (Eliasson 2013). However, before the war US were fit to be described as the great power, although it was erroneous to describe it as a superpower at that point. Through the war, US gained its strength towards world affairs f rom its status as the economic power. International Events In the times before the commencement of the war, America was the largest producer in the world. The nation was having the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"five years planà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that aimed at modernizing the Soviet economy. The implementation led to the resulting of other similar policies from the widely divergent origins. Besides, Rooseveltà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s isolationism emerged from the prevalent domestic and full desire to remain neutral in any occurrence of any international conflicts. Bringing believe that Americans entered the World War I merely to save the investments of industry capitalism in the Europe. The signing of the Neutrality Act of 1935 made the US illegal in shipping arms to the belligerents of any conflict within Europe. The Act made allowed the purchasing of non-armaments from the US only by the belligerents. It was as a result that belligerents could no longer sustain the cost of the offensive war (Eliasson 2013). American factories also switched from the civilian to military production. The switching was due to the staggering quantity of the Allied purchases that called forth something like the war mobilization in the United States. It also led to global equilibrium that allowed the US to prosper and grow in virtual isolation since 1815 was considered to have gone forever due to a short but shattering war. In the year 1898, US domestic gun support for the independence of Cuba enmeshed the US in the struggle with Spain over the ownership of the island nation. Therefore, the decision aiming to help Cuban resistance was the significant departure from the traditional American practice of liberal nationalism, and the result of that decision had far-reaching outcomes. Therefore, US suddenly became a colonial power with overseas dependencies (Ian 2015). Aspects of US America h as continued to rise as the world superpower and will remain dominant for the foreseeable future. It is possible as the American economy continues to be the bedrock of the global financial system. Over eighty percent of the all financial transactions carried out in the world conducts in dollars. Also, eighty-seven percent of foreign currency market transactions are conducted in dollars. Also, America political influence and power comes in many dimensions. The US foreign aid forms an effective way to cement its political clout globally. For instance, after the World War II the US doled out 32.7 billion dollars in financial assistance. These turns out that money buys high political cooperation from countries in need (Eliasson 2013). The US has the longest and oldest working national constitution in the world and strong institutions and rule of law that accompany it. Furthermore, Americanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s military superiority remains unrivaled. The US accounts for the thirty-seven p ercent of global military spending, and it spends more than four times what the worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s number two spender spends. The US dominates across sea, land, and, space that makes it rise to be the world superpower policemen. It gives the growing importance of the technology sector to the US forming a big deal over other nations (Ian 2015). The combination of these aspects strengthens America across the board in economics, political influence, military, and, innovations. These makes American to enjoy the privilege position in the world today making it be in the superpower nation. Driving forces fuelling policy decisions The development of the thermonuclear weapons and intercontinental missile in the year the 1950s brought chilling dimension to the US-Soviet rivalry. It made the US capable of annihilating any nation and most of the rest of the planet. Therefore, it was upon the US leaders to determine whether humankind surv ived or vanished in a radioactive firestorm. Making the US be a superpower nation that no other country or community could survive uncomfortable depending on the decision of the controller of nuclear arsenals that continue to grow in their terrifying lethality. Therefore, the driving force were mainly concerned about the communism take over, provis...

Human Rights for Women and International †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about theHuman Rights for Women and International. Answer: Introduction The fairer sex, as they call her, maybe due to the more delicate and smaller physical stature in comparison to men or is it because it is really very easy to be unfair to them. A woman is thrust into an environment of cruelty right from the moment of birth or sometimes even before that when the parents decide to terminate the life of a female fetus. A male child is ever privileged than a female child, be it regarding education, clothing, food or parental affection. Born into a hostile atmosphere of the male dominated world, a girl child is often married off even before the onset of puberty. This action of the parents have an inherent desire to shed off the burden of feeding the girl child while the post marriage life of a girl is distressed by the entire responsibility of household chores and procreation. As per United Nations report, as mentioned in Human Rights and Girl Child (1993), a woman is denied proper food, education and most of the times even the basic necessities and are c ompelled to live a life without respect and dignity in a cycle of disempowerment. A female is raised as a socially inferior and intellectually inadequate creature who is subjected to barbaric practice of female genital mutilation, unconsented marriage ( often to older men), marital rape, domestic violence, honor killings, dowry deaths and so on. The woman is expected to beget only a male child and the inability to do that brings further suffering and she is sometimes pressurized either to leave the house or accept husbands remarriage. In all the aspects, she is the one who has to suffer tremendous emotional and psychological trauma till death. Women live a hellish life, physically and emotionally enslaved to the men. Women are the pivotal victims of the worldwide flesh trade, forced human labor, human trafficking, construction, and agriculture. But this arena of business involves small children and impoverished men too. Poverty plays the protagonist in this regard. They are bulldozed to serve unpaid, even unfed, or for meager payment. The statistics reveals that nearly 20.9 million people are allured into such jobs by deception, wherein, 11.4 million (about 55%) are females in contrast to 9.5% of men. Nearly 2 billion people are living a socially unprotected life as per United Nations Trafficking in persons protocol, and among them women are subjected to the worst conditions. Empowering women with education, proper food, self respect as well as self defense techniques is the only way to fight this problem prevailing across the globe. The stereotyped attitude towards women is the root of most domestic and sexual violence ( from which 35% of women population suffered worldwide) against women which needs to be changed in order to eradicate discrimination and foster equality between men and women. Amendments are necessary in legislation, practices, regulations and customs to bring parity in society. Age old religious dogmas and preaching that teach to be unjust to women should be addressed and modified to create a happy and fair world. Torture and Degrading Treatment The process of inflicting severe discomfort or pain causing inhuman suffering on someone, physically or mentally, or imposing humiliating actions as a punitive measure or in order to compel the victim to carry out orders, is considered as torture. Torture often has long term impacts and may be considered even more serious than genocide. Let us take the example of the 9/11 attack on the US Trade Centre, where the attackers justified themselves by the idea that they were only retributing the age old tortures inflicted on their community. But in a modern and civilized society retribution should not be combated by other means of retribution. This maxim has not been followed in reality. Though Article 5 UDHR and several other complementary documents have advocated refraining from torturing any human being, the principles mentioned in the documents have actually not been followed by those nations that have applied exceptionalism as a means of justifying their ill-treatment toward enemy com batants. Article 1 of the UN Convention against Torture has clearly declared any severe form of torture as something that must be equated to inhumanity. But those who are to be considered as the protectors of humanity (especially the law enforcement officers) are pathetically the ones who are inflicting torture in its severest form. Torture and degrading treatment of the prisoners (and mainly those who had been imprisoned for having relation with any form of terrorist act) have surpassed the confinements of humanity, and hence, now, it has become quite difficult to distinguish between terrorists and law enforcers. This distinction should have always been upheld, but unfortunately it has not been so. Torture is the violation of a persons physical and mental integrity, but those who are supposed to sustain this integrity are now serving as agents of disintegration. The United States has always spoke of human rights, human dignity, and equity, but when it comes to the treatment of impr isoned terrorists, the state eventually forgets to implement its own philosophy. Such an approach should be considered detrimental not only to the reputation of the country as a global leader, but also to its international image as a land of hope and justice. It is high time that the countrys administration address the issue so that the lost prestige of the nation can be regained and so that the world can exemplify the country as a true embodiment of justice and equality. Substantive International Human Rights: the Right to Life Right to life, personal liberty and personal protection are the three most important fundamental rights that a human entity should enjoy in his life ( Art. 3 UDHR, Art.6 ICCPR, Art.4 ACHR, ACHPR, Art.2 CIS, Art.5 AL). These rights should not be violated even in times of public emergency and it is upon the state to protect the right to life under but in reality, like in the case of Akkoc versus Turkey, State, was found guilty as it failed to protect these fundamental rights. The state should leave no stone unturned while conducting an investigation in a candid and transparent method leading to proper health care provisions in order to add to the rate of life expectancy while reducing the rate of infant mortality by making honest effort to put an end to malnutrition and epidemics. The very next issue which needs to be addressed with much empathy and concern is what should be the fate of the unborn fetus, when a pregnant woman is found guilty. In the case of Paton Vs the state, the Euro pean Commission of Human Rights emphasized on the fact that life begins at conception and hence death penalty should be withdrawn or postponed in order to protect the right to life of the embryo (Art.6 ICCPR). There are certain state emergency situations like terrorist attack, riots, civil war, where the state is compelled to order a lawful arrest or prevent the escape of a lawfully detained convict [Art. 2 (2) ECHR] or impose shoot to kill policies, to inhibit greater loss of lives (McCann, Farrell, Savage Vs UK, Ogur Vs Turkey). Forced disappearance is a newly added incident which came forth in the Velasquez Rodriguez case 1990. According to the African charter, death of the non combatant during a civil war or tussles beyond borders violates the right to life. But it is the duty of the state to protect the wounded non combatant as well as the members of the armed forces. Providing aid and treatment to the person in distress or wounded is the humanitarian responsibility of the state. Genocide, a term that was introduced after the Jewish holocaust is considered as a heinous crime under international law, be it during war or peace. Protection and preservation of the fundamental rights of every humankind is the highest duty of a state ( Natan Lerner p 145, cited in Smith 2005, 213). Genocide is mass killing or the conspiracy to kill a large group of people or cause potential bodily harm to them. Any person or a group of persons planning the same is a criminal in the eyes of law and is subjected to punishment. The trial of Jean Paul Akayesu, stands as an evidence, which was first convicted under the international court. Corporal punishments should only be attributed to convicts who committed genocide, murder, extermination and willful killing. The state should handle every convict with humanitarian perspective and judge the degree of crime before imposing death penalty for the utmost protection of the fundamental right to life. Prisoners Rights Do enemy combatants have any right while being imprisoned? Though from the humanitarian perspective the answer to the question should be affirmative, in reality, what the United States criminal justice system is performing is a pointer to the fact that not always truth and humanity is upheld in the context of punishment. Prisoners are seldom provided with their rights in the tenure of their imprisonment, and for the imprisoned enemy combatants right is not only a dream that is never going to be fulfilled but it is also a word that should not be uttered in order to evade more severe tortures. Enemy combatants, till date, have not been provided with some basic rights that every prisoner, being member of the human species, should receive. The extreme degree of torture, the deteriorating conditions of the prisons, and the violent environment in which imprisoned enemy combatants have to spend their horrible life are pointers to the fact that sometimes death is better than a life of oppres sion and torture. International human rights are also applicable to prisoners, and in this respect one should take a note of the fact that, there are some positive obligations on the part of law-makers, and one such obligation is the requirement to enact legislation that ensures protection of prisoners right to life. But in the recent past, several incidents within the prison system have proved the fact that in the United States, right to life for imprisoned combatants is just a myth. It is also to be noted that though International Human Rights speak of the requirement of public officials not to engage in certain types of conduct; in the United States the almost direct interference of public officials in determining the fate of imprisoned enemy combatants should be considered everything but judicious. It can be pathetic to see that conditions of the concerned prisoners, but it would be more pathetic to imagine how in a country symbolizing freedom and liberty, the basic freedom and liberty of prisoner s are curbed on a daily basis. The hellish conditions of the American prisons and the apathy of the protectors of law towards the upholding of the principles of human rights altogether have resulted in a criminal justice system that is based on wrong assumptions and wrong principles. It is high time that the nations administration addresses and mitigates the issue, or else, the future of the countrys criminal justice system would be a bleak one.

Violence Essays (1674 words) - Dispute Resolution, Crime

Violence With the increase in society taking a stance against violence by many people, sports has become an area where some feel that the violent acts such as the hitting and fighting that occurs should be eliminated. You can not change something that has been around for so long because it would change the aspect of the game to something completely different. The elimination of violence should not be done in sport because the violence is a part of the game which would only hurt its popularity. The reasons that the violence is occurring in sport is due to six theories according to John Schneider. The violence in sport mirrors the violence found in society, violence as the result of economic incentives, the influence of crowd behavior on player violence, genetic causation for player aggression, learning theory and player aggression, and psychological stress and player violence (Lapchick 230). The theories of sport mirroring society, violence as a result of economic incentive, and the influence of the crowd behavior are the theories that I feel are responsible for the increasing violence in sports. Most people when involved in a highly stressful situation where violence is around would probably resort to a fight to resolve their differences. In sport, why should we expect any difference. In events such as hockey games, where people are expected to hit and make body contact, sooner or later a fight will break out and the fans will yell and scream for their favorite player involved. Like anything, if people around us are applauding us for a certain act we have done, we will try to do it over so that we will continue to be praised. In sports, there are some players whose only role on the team is to protect and enforce the unwritten rules of the game such as in hockey where it is not right to fight or hit a Wayne Gretezy or Mario Lemieux type of star player! . His economic incentive is to protect the team and if he does not, a new line of work might be in the future. All three of those theories relate closely to the role of the fighter in sport and why it is that he does commit the acts of violence. When leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) or the National Hockey League (NHL) are asked to try and remove the violence from their sport, they are hesitant because it is not what the fans want. Bryant and Zillman report that television viewers enjoy NFL plays more when they are rough and violent (McPherson 294). Why should these leagues remove the violence that is occurring if they are making money and keeping people employed. The fans of the games want to see these situations and eliminating the fighting aspect would hurt the support. When I watch a hockey game or any other sporting event with contact, there is nothing better than seeing a good fight take place. One of the best-selling videos in parts of the Northeastern United States has been a collection of the best fights in the NHL (McPherson 294). Even former NHL president Clarence Campbell felt that the violence taking place in his sport was called for and was reluctant to remove the fighting and the body contact because he knew that it is what the majority of hockey fans want. Fighting is a well-established safety valve for players. If violence ceases to exist, it will not be the same game. Insofar as fighting is part of the show, we certainly sell it. We do not promote it. We tolerate it and we bring it under disciplinary control which we believe satisfies the public (Snyder 201). Its better that the violence take place between two willing combatants such as in sports than in a situation involving spousal abuse where the majority of the times the female is being attacked against her consent. Allowing people not to be able vent their frustrations through sport in my mind would increase the violence that is happening away from the playing field. It is a known fact that sports does keep kids off the street and away from gangs which is why you see so many athletic and boxing clubs being run out of the inner city. It is allowing the youth to take that hostility out on a willing participant who is ready and consenting rather than against an innocent bystander. Some individuals have gone as far as

Restriction Enzyme Lab Report Essays

Restriction Enzyme Lab Report Essays Restriction Enzyme Lab Report Paper Restriction Enzyme Lab Report Paper It is thought that, together with enzymes that methyl portions of native DNA, restriction enzymes protect cells from DNA of invading organisms cutting such DNA into pieces, thereby restricting its activity. In this experiment, using agrees gel electrophoresis, the number and relative positions of restriction sites for three restriction enzymes, Score, Hinkle and Pull, on the circular plasmid abrupt were mapped by determining the length (in base pairs) of the DNA fragments obtained when cutting the plasmid with each of the restriction enzymes separately and each combination thereof. In agrees gel electrophoresis, a molecular sieve is created such that the distance traveled in the gel toward the anode by any DNA fragment (all of which carry negatively charged phosphate groups in the presence of a basic buffer) is inversely proportional to its molecular weight. Further, such distance traveled has a linear relationship with the log of such fragments molecular weight. Since DNA consists solely of deconstructionists that differ only by their bases and each base pair has approximately the same molecular weight, the distance traveled in the gel toward the anode by any DNA fragment also has a linear relationship with the log f its length (in base pairs). Specifically, the restriction sites were mapped as follows: (i) lambda DNA was cut using the restriction enzyme Handbill to form fragments of known base pair lengths which were separated by agrees gel electrophoresis; (ii) abrupt was digested in seven different ways using the combinations of restriction enzymes discussed above and the fragments from such digests were separated in the same electrophoresis; (iii) using the data from the lambda DNA fragments, a regression was run to determine the relationship between the log of the number of base pairs in fragment and the distance traveled towards the anode during he electrophoresis; (iv) the base pair length of the fragments from each digest was calculated using the relationship determined from the lambda DNA data; and (v) the length of the fragments produced by the different digests were analyzed to produce a map, as will be discussed below. IV. Results. 1. Photo. Attached as Exhibit A-I is a photograph of the results of the electroph oresis performed using our abrupt digests. The results show significant smearing, likely the result of inadequate time allowed for digestion of the DNA.

Research Analysis on the Effects of Functional Mobility Skills Paper

Analysis on the Effects of Functional Mobility Skills Training for Young Students with Physical Disabilites - Research Paper Example 2. Literature Review In order to introduce the research problem to the readers several references were cited by the investigator. Three key points which researcher has discussed in literature review are enlisted below; a) The researcher has presented the strengths and weakness of Traditional Developmental Modal through literature review. Most of the researchers have reached the consensus that the traditional approaches are limited for learning motor and functional skills. (Crt Marincek, 2001, p.251). b) Secondly, the supremacy of functional modal over the developmental modal is discussed at length. Functional modal use of therapy integrated with education is more natural and beneficent. (Piercy, 1986, p.6). c) Another important point of discussion is the validity and acceptability of MOVE model. â€Å"MOVE is designed to embed mobility skill practice into functional every day routines.† (Miller, 2005, p.831). 3. Research Format Following facts about the research were identifie d, a) Description of the Research Format(s) The â€Å"Effects of Functional Mobility Skills training for Young students with Physical Disabilities† is a qualitative as well as a quantitative research. The research deals with the statistical details and comparisons as well as talks about the conceptual and qualitative issues with of MOVE curriculum. Moreover, hypothesis of the research cannot be precisely described rather is will result in some general conclusion which will require further studies and observations to strengthen the hypothesis. The research design is quasi-experimental in nature because its offer less randomization of participants being only five. Quasi-experimental designs are particularly useful in natural and a classroom setting which is the case in this research. Moreover, the research is more practical and less academic which is also an attribute of quasi-experimental research designs. The â€Å"Effects of Functional Mobility Skills training for Young stu dents with Physical Disabilities† is a single group research design. These designs are used were immediate and more practical resulted required to be established in order to ascertain the effects of a treatment conducted in the research. b) Description of the Method(s) of Data Collection Direct observation and standardized measure are used as the most prominent data collection methodologies. Direct observation method requires a clear definition of target behaviors and observer may be a teacher, parent or some other external observer. Standardized data may be collected using a specific instrument like Gait Trainer or through some other means like interviews and/or questionnaires etc. to record results and reaction in an experiment. All participants in the experiment are subjected to the same tests which increase the validity of the data collection. c) Description of the Method(s) of Data Analysis The data is mainly collected through direct observation and standardized measures. However, it is not an extensively diverse dataset and the analysis and comparisons are conducted through simple graphical representation of data in line graphs. These graphs are elaborated through variation of means and percentages and other statistical tools. Moreover, the overlap across phases,

Vanilla Bond outline Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Vanilla Bond outline - Coursework Example or proving this observation first of all the vanilla bonds of Microsoft and Aon Corp were analyzed, with the focus being on determining the coupon rate, price and the present value of the bonds. Secondly it was observed that Microsoft has a better credit rating as compared to that of Aon Corp. And in the end it was observed that due to its highest credit rating in the country, Microsoft is considered to be a better investment option for the banks and the investors. The main reason for selecting Microsoft and Aon Corp is the difference between their credit ratings. Microsoft is rated at the highest level where as Aon Corp is suffering from a gradually deteriorating credit rating. These companies were selected so as to determine how the different credit ratings influence these companies. Companies are rated on the basis of their financial results, their history of borrowing and repayments, and the extent of their assets and liabilities, so that their credit worthiness could be determined. Credit ratings show that Microsoft has better credit ratings as compared to Aon Corp. Such higher credit ratings increase the company’s access to financial markets and also increase its financial flexibility. As it can be seen, the bonds held by Aon Corp are generating higher yield to maturity than the bonds held by Microsoft Corp. Even though the time till maturity of the two companies is same for some bonds, still Aon Corp is charged with a higher rate of interest than Microsoft Corp because of their lower credit ratings. For the bonds that will mature till the years 2015, 2020 and 2040, the respective yields to maturity for Microsoft and Aon Corp. are 0.64, 2.27 & 3.73 and 2.07, 3.37 & 4.67 respectively. Thus it is obvious that the bonds issued to Aon Corp are receiving a better price than that of Microsoft Corp. Banks and Investors depend greatly on the credit ratings of the companies while making investment decisions. A company with a lower credit rating will imply that

Bette Howlands Criticism of Henry Jamess Washington Square :: Henry James Washington Square

Bette Howland's Criticism of Henry James's Washington Square Bette Howland, in her criticism of Henry James's Washington Square, focuses on two different aspects of the story's development. She begins by impressing on the reader how Henry James himself viewed his creation and then plunges into the history behind the plot. In doing this, she describes how Henry James has used irony to make this story his own creation. Half way through the article she changes directions and shows how Washington Square is the forerunner of his other novels. She describes how they all have the same basic plot. According to Bette Howland, Henry James never cared for his novel Washington Square. He refers to it as "A poorish thing" and "a tale purely American" (1). In fact, when he compiled his stories in his New York Edition he omitted this story from its pages. He claimed that, "I've tried to read over Washington Square and I can't and I fear it must go" (1). Ms. Howland claims that it is "a fitting irony. You might say that like Dr. Sloper in the novel, James disinherited his heroine, he cut her out of his will" (1). The author of the criticism then focuses on how Henry James received the anecdote that he would transform into his novel. Henry James twists the basic story into his own work by way of irony. Dr. Sloper is at the center of James's irony. While Dr. Sloper criticizes Catherine as a simpleton who is "ugly and overdressed" (3) he states, "I expect nothing . . . so that if she gives me a surprise, it will be all clear gain. If she doesn't, it will be no loss" (3). This is ironical because he himself played a part in her creation. Bette Howland states that while Washington Square may lack the 'supersubtle' nuances of Henry James' future novels, it "offers his irony at its most efficient. The novel is a system of ironies a closed system. . . James is always doing two things at once. Except for Catherine, the characters are always describing themselves and each other . . . and everything they say cuts both ways" (5). Bette Howland also examines the similarities present between Washington Square and The Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl. In the four novels, Henry James uses his favorite configuration of a triangle.

College Players Should Get Paid Essay

In the world, college athletics grows and continues to bring large financial benefits to colleges, universities and even sponsors. This leads to many debates concerning the payment of the athletes. Some people think that scholarship paid to colleges for these student athletes is enough while others claim that the payments might make them to leave the college early for participating in the athletics. Division 1 college athletes should be paid. College athletes put their bodies on the line just like the pros do. Wide receiver Martin Brown tears his ACL and his career in football is over. Defensive tackle Eric Legrand gets paralyzed from the neck down and his career in football is over. Wide receiver Dante Love gets a spinal injury and ends his career in football. Players do a lot for their communities. Like the Santa Ana college football team devoted a whole weekend volunteering in two charity events. Last year Ohio State did community service for a total of about 6,496 hours. Ole Miss has a program call The Ole Miss Rebel Reading Program where they read to local elementary schools. The college athletes bring in a lot of money to their institutions. The players should receive some of this money because without them the schools cannot be able to receive all the popularity and the money. College athletes make enough money for colleges that it would not hurt to give some back. They should take better care of their student-athletes by paying them for their services. Many College athletes live in poverty because the money they get is not sufficient enough to pay for all of the expenses and basic necessities. The athletes that graduate from colleges stay because their parents support them by giving or sending money to them. If college athletes are paid, there would be more athletes graduating from colleges. Paying athletes would be good for everyone and players would be forced to go for college education instead of only concentrating on the sports. The colleges athletes are not allowed to work hence do not get money to purchase the necessities. This leads to players accepting any illegal money, cars, clothes, etc. Most college athletes don’t turn professional, so the athletes won’t have any working experience when they get into the real world. This would give the non-athletes and advantage in the working world over the athletes. Most of the athletes that have the opportunity to leave school and turn professional do so, because college athletes live in near poverty. To avoid all the illegal gains, the athletes should be paid. Maryland’s Gary Williams says â€Å"†¦. some of these guys are pretty poor coming here, and a lot of college students have some money — you feel out of place, you don’t feel competitive academically sometimes, and I think it could do a lot of good† If colleges don’t pay the athletes the professional leagues should. Professional leagues such as the NBA, NHL, NFL, and MLB use colleges as minor leagues. Most of the players in these leagues come from universities across the U.S.A. Since the leagues get the athletes from the universities, they should pay them the same way they league players. College athletes should receive money for all of their needs, or if they can’t do this the athletes should be given the opportunity to work, which will assist them, learn about working in real world.
